Our Name Doesn't Mean Anything

I should be smoking something

Posted by in random thoughts

Why do we call it a “washing machine” but not a “dryer machine”? Yes, it’s a machine, but we just call it a dryer. It struck me as odd this morning while looking at it. And why, when we refer to both, it’s “washer and dryer,” but on its own, it’s “washing machine”? Also, why do we say “hot water heater”? The word heater already implies hot water. Why not just “water heater,” “hot water,” or simply “the tank”? (Thanks to Laura Kern for that insight.)

Bluesky

Posted by in random thoughts

Well, I made the move to Bluesky and deleted my ExTwitter account. I felt less inclined to engage with people there and more like I was just getting raged at. The ad hominem responses were ridiculous. Commenting with facts never got an acknowledgment—just another round of strawman arguments, whataboutisms, or non-sequiturs. After a while, I wasn’t sure if I was interacting with bots or actual humans. My posts also got less and less engagement because I refuse to pay Musky when I am the one providing the content. The whole…read more

What I want in a watch

Posted by in random thoughts

The watch I want is a mechanical watch that has a transparent LCD screen as the glass watch face.  Thus, the watch looks awesome in any light for telling the time. But when notifying of meetings, messages, etc, — or when I touch the glass — the LCD glass kicks in and I can see the message.  Oh, and keep it round!  Please techies, get on that. (I wanted this when the first digital watches came out. Need the LCD glass technology to catch up)

Why again?

Boss: how can we rip off the customer more? Employee: well we cannot reduce the size anymore, we already reduced them by 1/3 their size Boss: I know, cutout the center and call it a donut! FFS! It’s bad enough products are getting smaller, but they keep changing the to more processed ingrediencies (i.e. cheaper), reducing the product size, and now cutting out parts and calling it a donut? Please, stop trying to maximize every bit of profit off of us customers and give us what we want: normal size,…read more

What’s up

Posted by in random thoughts, why bother

Exactly, it’s been 2 years NIM! Too much information out there on the interwebs. I haven’t been inspired to make more content to add to the deafening noise. But then again, who cares? No one is here but me. So, I am going to add some thoughts and content to entertain myself. This is the junk drawer, right? I need a dark mode, too. working on it…

State name mashup

Posted by in random thoughts

It was a running joke that we had an remote employee from another state.   Not to confuse the person with local people, someone in the office mashed up their name with the state.   It stuck when describe that person to other people. I was curious how many state names, first name mashups there are are there.    It could be first name + state name or vice versa. I’d imagine I missed a whole lot, but here is my list: Jillinois (Jill + Illinois) Markansas (Mark + Arkansas) Adelaware…read more

I don’t trust review sites.

Posted by in censorship, why bother

“Your trust is our top concern, so companies can’t alter or remove reviews.” ~Glassdoor I was recently shocked when my review on Glassdoor was taken down. It wasn’t a flattering review of my former employer, but it was 100% accurate. I wanted to post the item anonymously as possible. I am fearful of retaliation even if I no longer work at the company. CEO’s, COO’s, VP’s, directors, etc have connections to other upper management people at companies in the area;  networking is a company’s life blood. I didn’t want to become…read more

I am not the enemy

Posted by in censorship, security by obscurity

There was an article the past week of a research getting access to content via a security hole.    He didn’t take advantage of the exploit, but notified and then posted his findings.   Soon after he found himself in a lawsuit, which could remove years off his life if found guilty; jail time for hacking. And it remind me of the time I was working on a contract over 10 years ago.   It was web base app, using JSP and servlets.   I signed a NDA agreement that…read more

New York State is a wonderful place in the winter time

Posted by in random thoughts

To any person who has been stuck on the thruway near Buffalo in a blizzard, I feel for you.   This year there wasn’t a lot of snow.  But for some reason I was thinking about blizzards. It was Thanksgiving week, 2000. We were making the trek out west to see family in western NY and beyond with our 3 kids (youngest was 2 at the time). We heard that it was going to snow in Buffalo and didn’t think anything of it. My wife grew up out that way and my…read more

Selling meds on Syfy

Posted by in idiot box

I find commercials selling medicine or medical devices on tv stations strange. In my opinion, this is something that is best served up to doctors and not to the consumer.  I mean, isn’t that the function of a doctor, to figure out what is wrong with their patient and prescribe the appropriate drug? Why am I paying them so much money, if not? I am not going to ask my doctor if a drug is right for me; that is their job. Granted there is the internet and all the…read more
